I have been thinking about getting a different truck, and I was just wondering what kind of mileage some of the different vehicles that are used to pull your boats are getting?
My present truck just has a 4.2L V6 motor and I only got 11.7 mpg going to Egypt, it pulls it ok unless there is much of a head wind.
How about some of you all?
My 2002 avalanche with the 5.3L V8 is still getting between 12 and 13 miles per gallon pulling the boat. That is "blending in with traffic" not 55 mph. I think that is pretty common with the rest of the guys running 2000-2006 chevy's with the 5.3L. Not pulling the boat and keeping my foot out of it, I can average 19 hwy and 15 city.
My 99 Dakota 4WD (140,000 miles) with a 3.9L V6 gets 13-14 towing my dad's 17' aluminum walleye-style boat. It does pretty good towing for the most part, but is a little sluggish going up hills. I typically get 17-18 hwy (but I've gotten 20 before) and 14-15 city.
Hank, you might as well get a truck with a V-8 as the gas mileage is about the same or better than the V-6's when pulling a boat. I get about 19 with my Yukon XL on the road, 12-13 pulling the boat, so you might as well get the additional power of the bigger engine. I know they cost more, but they're worth more at the other end. Generally speaking, the GM's get the best mileage, followed by Ford and then Dodge. I'm not sure where the Toyota's and Nissan's fit in. Maybe Mike Daniel can let you know about those.
